The Illusion of the Wallow
A nine-hour drive to rescue eight pigs from a hoarding situation — each one with a name, a history, a distinct way of moving through the world — opens the final episode in our backyard and small-farm series, this time on pigs: some of the most cognitively and emotionally complex animals we raise for food.
We also look at 4-H and FFA market animal projects, where kids are taught to bond completely with an animal on a schedule that ends at auction, an ending most are shielded from witnessing.
We look at what pigs actually understand about that bond, a real case that ended in a search warrant, and how little oversight exists once "small and local" takes an animal out of view.
